Bruins look for redemption after a disappointing playoff run last season.
October 8, 2014
Training camp has started and the Bruins have put, yet another, long summer behind them. After failing to live up to expectations in last year’s playoffs, the Bruins went home empty handed for the third year in a row, but with veterans like Bergeron, Krejci, Chara, Lucic, Marchand, and Rask the Bruins look like they have another good setup for an exciting season.
May of 2014 saw the third consecutive, heartbreakingly early, end to the playoffs of the Boston Bruins and with October 8th quickly approaching, the Bruins look to June again. “It’s been a long summer for us — longer than we’re used to in past years — and I think that our hunger has been growing during that summer. Everybody looks ready to go and really excited about the new season,” said goalie Tuuka Rask. Rask started 58 games at goal, a career high, and posted a .930 save percentage for the season, earning his first ever Vezina trophy.
Aside from the aforementioned returners, the Bruins, also, present an impressive roster of rookie prospects. David Pastrnak is just one of the prospects making their way to the Bruins main camp this week, hoping to prove that they can play at a professional level. The 18 year old Czech, Pastrnak, was a first round draft pick for the Bruins after playing two years for Södertälje Sportklubb in Södertälje, Sweden. Pastrnak hopes to improve defensively in the weeks leading up to the season. “I was a one-way forward before I went to Sweden,” Pastrnak said “I was playing just forward, then I came to Sweden and my mentality changed, and my work ethic changed. I got to Sweden and I started practicing defense. I know it’s important to be a two-way forward if you want to make, not just the NHL, but every big league.”
One of the most exciting things about the 2011 Stanley Cup win for the Bruins was that looking forward, we had a fighting chance at the Cup for the foreseeable future. That’s what made the ‘12, ‘13 and ‘14 playoffs so depressing. Luckily for B’s fans the 2014-2015 season could be the light at the end of the tunnel. We lost to Montreal in the least Bruins fashion possible. Sure there were a couple big hits, and we all got a good laugh when Thornton squirted P.K Subban with the water bottle, but other than that we were terrible. Coach Claude Julien wants to be “as aggressive as possible” on the ice this year, and if we play aggressive Bruins hockey we saw through the whole regular season, we’ll be in good shape for May and June.
Allow me to speak on behalf of Boston sports fans everywhere when I say…I need this one! The Pats haven’t won the Super Bowl in ten years… TEN! The Celtics haven’t won a championship since ‘08. And the Sox have managed to go from worst, to first, and all the way back to worst in a matter of three years! One of the things that makes sports great is that absolutely anything can happen, especially in Boston, but realistically the Bruins look good enough to win it all this year. Some say it’s too early to call. Not me. Bruins in four for the Cup! Lucky number seven is three years overdue on the Garden’s rafters.
