November 5, 2014
The 2014-2015 college basketball season is looking like a good one. But the team that stands out the most this year is the Kentucky Wildcats led by their coach John Calipari. What stands out about the Wildcats this year though? Besides having nine McDonald’s All-Americans on their team, the Wildcats have a unique team with mixed personalities that all seem to blend. Not only that, but the Wildcats also have the number one recruiting class in America in the class of 2014. Big names are coming to Lexington, like All-Americans Tyler Ulis, Karl Towns, Trey Lyles and Devin Booker.
This past summer the team played in their first tournament together in a nice vacation spot: the Bahamas. The team played 6 games together for a 5-1 record. “My goal is for our team to grow together, to learn about one another, to have fun and to compete against teams that will stretch us out. These teams should be a challenge that will let us really see where we are at this point. But again, learning and having fun will be the emphasis of the trip. It’s another opportunity for us to fail fast,” Coach Calipari said in an interview before the tournament. Calipari call did not coach all games either, giving his assistant coaches a chance to get a sense of the team’s character being in charge.
The top 25 rankings have not come out yet for this year, but it is pretty certain the Wildcats are looking at a top 5 spot, but could this year’s team top the 2012 national championship team? It’s quite possible looking at how well the team played together in the Bahamas. In those six games having lost by 1 in the championship the team showed how well and unselfish they play together, but most of all they showed how hard they play for one another. Watching the team play together you can see how bad they want to win. These are all the characters the team need to top the 2012 team staring 5 first round picks and 6 overall in the NBA draft that year, consisting of Anthony Davis (1st pick), Michael-Kidd Ghilchrist (2nd pick), and Terrence Jones (16th pick). It is very capable this year!
The freshmen have an extremely unique class with all four of them being McDonald’s all-American. Starting with Tyler Ulis the 5’9 point guard from Lima, OH, who brings a high basketball IQ for being under sized and very flashy ball handling. Coming off an amazing senior year at St. Joseph high school, NJ, the 6’11 power forward Karl Towns can handle the ball extremely well and can pass the ball just as good as any point guard in the class of 2014. Not only those two but the kid from Moss Point, Michigan, Devin booker can shoot the ball lights out from almost anywhere on the floor with a long 6’6 body that can stretch the floor for the Wildcats. And last the highest ranked player of the 4 of them Trey Lyles from Indianapolis, Indiana is a power forward standing long at 6’10 is extremely crafty around the basketball and an amazing will to win.
Not only do the Wildcats have the number one recruiting class in the country but they also have a number of experienced players coming back who lost in the National Championship this past year to Connecticut. The Wildcat’s will have tremendous guard play from two experienced sophomore twins Andrew and Arron Harrison, as well as center Dakari Johnson coming back from a very solid Freshmen year last season. But the biggest key for the Wildcats will be Junior Alex Poythress a 6’8 freakishly athletic Forward who plays his hardest every time on the floor for his team to win. A few other Wildcats will also stand out this year.
So does John Calipari’s Wildcats have a high chance of winning a National title this year? How will they get there? Will it be hard? Easily? All the answers lie ahead this season as the Wildcats will play a highly talented Kansas Jayhawks team as their first real test November 23rd in the champion’s tournament in Chicago, IL.
