The NFL season is coming to an end. With only the Super Bowl remaining, in a surprising turn of events, the upcoming clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs has taken an unexpected twist. The buzz surrounding the game has shifted from the field to a controversial narrative involving singing icon Taylor Swift, and Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce.
The connection between Swift and Kelce has added a layer of interest, bringing a factor of celebrity to the sports-centric storyline. As hate directed at the Chiefs surfaced due to this newfound relationship and Swifts fanbase attaching themselves to the team, the controversy has become a talking point among fans, players, and analysts alike. Fans are now not only anticipating the game but also devoured in the off-field drama.
Social media posts on platforms such as TikTok, X, Instagram, and more begging the 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy to “end the Chiefs reign”. This has even become a topic surfacing Holyoke High. One student expressed “Brocky Prudy, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, please I beg to beat the Chiefs”, said Cian Callahan, 11th Grader.
This begging of the opposing team to beat the Chiefs didn’t start with the 49ers though. This became a very popular topic before the Chiefs went against the Baltimore Ravens. Pleading Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to beat the chiefs, this persisted to the point where fans nicknamed Jackson “Lamerica”.
The Ravens met their defeat against the Chiefs on January 28th, losing to the Chiefs by 7 points with a final score of 17-10.
The 49ers ended up coming back from an initial 24-7 run during the first half against the Detroit Lions as well on January 28th. During the 2nd half the 49ers ended up coming up from the mud beating the Lions by 3 points with a final score of 34-31.
The 49ers and Chiefs have had a history of going against each other with them originally going against each other in Super Bowl LIV. The 49ers succumbed to defeat in the Super Bowl but fans are wondering if that will change this year.
The timing of this revelation just before the game keeps on bringing more and more anticipation. The consequences of this controversy remain unclear, leaving fans waiting to see how it’s going to unfold both on and off the field. As the game prepares to happen, the spotlight isn’t just on the game itself, but on the drama that has unexpectedly become a central highlight to the big match.
The 49ers and Chiefs go against each other on Sunday, February 11th at 6:30 PM eastern standard time. Tune in on it on streaming services such as the NFL app, ESPN, Hulu, and more.
