The San Francisco Museum of Contemporary Arts, or ICASF is reopening, now in a different place in San Francisco. It has been shared with the world that recently, ICASF moved to downtown San Francisco, specifically in a modernist building known as “The Cube”.
The Cube was a space that Vornado let the people of ICASF rent out, and this was by far their best decision yet. ICASF, after being open for over 2 years now, wanted to move to a place to reach a wider audience; The Cube. This however did mean temporary closure, as they had to close to redesign the building entirely. After about half a year they feel more than ready to reopen to the people of San Francisco.
After temporarily closing in order to make a huge move, this nonprofit newcomer museum is reopening on the 25th of october 2024, for everyone to enjoy and see! They did this to have better opportunities to reach visitors and according to Glenn Weiss, the vice president and co-head of real estate in Vornado, “Further Enliven and elevates the financial district as a nexus for culture and commerce”. ICA is an outlier from the other museums, as it focuses more towards technology. “In terms of ICA, I do think the concept of it being a startup is attractive to people who work in technology” Ethan Beards, the chairman of the institution states. “Having spent my life in tech and startups and contemporary arts, this is a huge love of mine, and this was really a love of the combination of those two. It’s a startup museum, and how often do you get to get involved in a startup museum?” He shares his love of technology through this museum and hopes to spread it to others like him – via
Along with their move, ICASF has had the opportunity to stay rent and utility free due to their deal with Vornado Realty Trust. A positive about this move is that they’ll be celebrating their 2nd anniversary upon opening. During this time they’ll also be celebrating the Black art week in San Francisco! So it might be a very livid spot in downtown San Francisco. Creating a space of diversity and inclusion for many minorities.
On top of them moving for their visitor’s reach, it actually helps them a lot more with their rent situation as well! As them, among all the other museums now in downtown half a lot more affordable. As they strive for experimentation and nimbleness, it will also allow artists to “dig deeper” and create newer things!
The museum loves to have new artist’s art in the museum, so it’s always adding new art, or sharing impressive hardworking art pieces that people dedicate so much time to create. This museum is highly recommended to visit if you ever go to San Francisco due to their large range and diversity in art. Though many people would say that every single museum in San Francisco is worth visiting!
