Long Beach State men’s volleyball is on a dominant run in 2025, boasting an 18-1 record and looking like the team to beat. With a combination of experienced veterans, rising stars, and elite coaching, the Beach has all the tools to complete an undefeated national championship season.
Key Players Leading the Charge
Senior outside hitter Sotiris Siapanis has been a major force, averaging 3.18 kills per set with a .342 hitting percentage. Opposite hitter Skyler Varga adds 2.98 kills per set and has been a presence at the net with 82 total blocks. And of course, Bulgarian National team player and now freshman setter Simeon Nikolov, younger brother of former AVCA Player of the Year Alex Nikolov, has seamlessly stepped into a leadership role, running one of the most efficient offenses in the country.
Middle blocker Shane Holdaway has anchored the front line, contributing both offensively and defensively with his blocking and quick attacks. Libero Mason Briggs has been key in the backcourt, delivering elite passing and digging, allowing Long Beach to maintain strong defensive play and transition smoothly into their offense. Meanwhile, outside hitter Clarke Godbold has been another vital piece, stepping up in crucial moments with his powerful swings and reliable blocking.
Dominating Top Competition
Long Beach has already proven itself against the nation’s best teams. Their biggest win came in a four-set victory over No. 3 UCLA, a rematch of last season’s national championship. They’ve also taken down other top-ranked programs, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure such as Hawaii, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and more teams including upcoming US National players.
Strong Coaching and Championship Pedigree
Long Beach State has built a legacy of success, winning NCAA titles in 2018 and 2019. Their coaching staff has developed a system centered on efficiency, blocking, and defensive discipline. Head coach Alan Knipe, a former U.S. National Team coach, has instilled a championship mentality, preparing his players for the toughest moments of the season.
The Path to an “Easy” Championship
The Beach must maintain their high level of play as they navigate a challenging Big West Conference schedule and the NCAA Tournament. With their depth, experience, and championship mindset, Long Beach State has a real shot at completing a perfect season and solidifying itself as one of the greatest teams in NCAA men’s volleyball history before Nikolov goes back to playing for the Bulgarian National team for the Volleyball National League.
