The Big E: Fried Food Galore
The Herald brings you a personal review of some delicious, and flat out strange, food items that were available at the Big E this year.
Every fall as the leaves begin to change and sweatshirts and fuzzy socks are once again broken out, The Big E brings us one more reason to love autumn. With something for everyone, it’s no wonder the attraction draws such a large crowd. This year, the Big E’s 100th anniversary, I traveled to West Springfield with the intention of trying as much food as physically could.
Sonia’s Churros: These warm, delicious churros come topped with oreos, caramel, chocolate, or cinnamon sugar. You get about six medium sized churros that melt in your mouth and are absolutely delicious.
Fried butter balls: When I first saw the sign for these, I was grossed out. Who just eats butter? Have we really just started to fry everything? But then I started thinking- hmmmm its fried butter. Eventually, my curiosity won over my disgust and I bought some fried butter balls. They were weirdly good and almost melt in your mouth. If you can get over the fact that they will probably clog your arteries, they are really worth a taste.
Fried oreos: In my opinion, fried oreos are the original fried food. They are a staple. Once in everyone’s life they should taste the warm, gooey goodness that is a fried oreo. There’s about fifty stands that sell fried oreos at the Big E, just choose one and indulge on one of the greatest things ever.
Rhode Island Clam Fritters: I. Love. Seafood. These clam fritters come from the Rhode Island building and are sooo good. If you aren’t a seafood fan, these may not be for you, but luckily the Big E has so many kinds of food you’re destined to find one you like.
Cinnamon Saloon Cinnamon Bun: It was love at first smell with the Cinnamon Saloon. There was so much cinnamon and warm goodness I knew I had to get something. So naturally, I bought the biggest thing they had. It was a large cinnamon bun with maple frosting on it and it was heaven in your mouth.
Del’s Lemonade: I’m convinced it’s the enormous amount of sugar they put into this lemonade that makes it so good, but nonetheless it’s freaking awesome. It really just tastes so good that you forget that it’s ridiculously overpriced, but you don’t care because after all the food you just inhaled you need a tasty, sugary, lemony drink to wash it all down.
Kettlecorn: Another food that just smells so good, Kettlecorn is amazing. It’s sweet and yummy and you can get a bag the size of a toddler. If I could get a bag the size of The Hulk, I’m afraid I would.
Fried pickles: Probably the weirdest thing ever, but I’m not shocked the Big E found a way to make vegetables unhealthy. That’s not to say they aren’t good, because boy, they are really good. Plus, who wants their greens healthy anymore?
Shaking milk: For years now I’ve wondered what it is that makes this milk so good. For someone who gags at regular milk, I really can’t get enough of the creaminess of this milk. With three flavors (Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry), this stuff is worth the money.
Maine baked potato: Even though you have to spend 30 minutes waiting in line, the Maine building has some gosh darn good potatoes. They have an assortment of toppings.
The Mick Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese: Shoutout to Herald Staffer Nick Elkins for making me by far the best grilled cheese I have ever had in my life. It was so cheesy and buffalo-y it was absolute heaven in my mouth. A ++, Nick, A++.
Moonut: Besides the thousand of calories this half-donut half-ice cream combination contains, it also comes with two toppings. It took me two trips to the Big E to get it, but it was well worth it. It was literally amazing.
Fried Mac & Cheese bites: This stuff is good. I didn’t think mac and cheese could get any better until someone had the bright idea to fry it. Absolute genius in my opinion. They were warm and cheesy little balls of deliciousness.
New Hampshire Mac & Cheese: The line and price for this mac and cheese didn’t really float my boat but it was still wicked good. It had so much cheesy goodness in it and they make it right in front of you which I swear makes it taste even better.
Fried Cheesecake: In usual Big E fashion, why not fry cheesecake? It was kind of a weird taste. Cheesecake is usually cold and hard but fried cheesecake is warm and soft. Strange, but good. It still had the delicious cheesecake taste and even came with strawberries. Weird but still really good.
