This season of MTV’s Teen Wolf has wrapped up its unexplained and confusing plot with a surprisingly calm ending; something we are not very used to seeing from our hormone-ridden supernatural teens.

While the season had its upsides, almost none of the plot line has been explained (and the things that have been explained don’t make any sense) to the audience in its final episode ‘Smoke and Mirrors’. The explanations we all expected to come fell short, and it’s been difficult to get very invested into the hodgepodge of a season.

One of the main examples of the shows lack in reliability is Derek’s storyline. To recap, in the beginning of the season, Derek was taken by Kate Argent brought into Mexico. At some point during this, he was magically de-aged and turned into a teenager. After being saved by Scott and his friends, he randomly changed back to his regular age after a few days.

After he is re-aged, Derek slowly began to lose his werewolf abilities until he turns human. There was no explanation for this, and no reason as to why Kate would do all of this just to take Derek’s powers rather than simply killing him when she had a real chance too. In the finale, Derek receives a severe injury and appears to die, until he suddenly gets all of his werewolf powers back and transforms into a wolf in time to stop Kate. Derek says that he has “evolved” and to the Teen Wolf‘s writers, this is all the audience needed to understand how Derek is still alive, let alone how he got his powers back.

As Entertainment News states, “the werewolf world proves to have its own system of checks and balances regarding humanity and power, as Scott and Peter battle it out for both, respectively, in this episode.” As usual, Peter is angry at Scott and tries to kill him because he believes he stole his family’s power, even though he knows Scott got his powers naturally. A continuous theme throughout the show, Peter is power hungry and will do anything to get what rightfully belongs to him, thought you could argue, that Peter’s own nephew Derek could be responsible diminishing his Alpha status by healing Cora (who, is one of many characters that have disappeared from the show with little to no explanation) back in the third season. Peter hating Scott and planning this insane scheme to kill him and take his alpha powers, makes even less sense than his reasons for creating the dead pool; which is really saying something.

Being a diehard Teen Wolf fan since day one, it hurts me to say these things, and to watch the show take such a steep turn downhill in quality. One saving grace, thankfully, is that the cast does consists of a few great actors, that have made the show worth watching even in this season that has been sloppy and poorly written.

While the show has plummeted in quality over the past season, there is no doubt that people will continue to watch the Beacon Hills gang battle out their next villain in the upcoming season five. After all, we can never get enough of some hot teenage werewolves.
