The Black Mamba
A look at where one of the greatest basketball players of all time stands in the game now
Kobe Bryant, aka the goat, aka the black mamba, aka the chosen one, is coming to his final years of his basketball career in the NBA. “I’m at my last chapter in my career….. I just don’t know how many pages are left,” Kobe said in an interview. Ranked 40th in the NBA’s top 500 players, Kobe comes back from playing just 6 games in the previous season, which was the “reason” for being 40th. “Yeah after being in the league for so many years I realized a while ago that the people that make this are a bunch of idiots,” Kobe said when asked about his thoughts of being ranked 40th in the league in an interview.
It has been a rough start for Kobe and his Lakers so far as the team started off 3-11 in their first 14 games. Not only does Nick young have yet to play a game with the team because of an injury, but their first round pick Julies Randle will be out for the season as he collided with James Harden on a fast break and came out with a broken leg. He will miss the remainder of the season.
But Kobe Bryant. Kobe is averaging just over 26 points a game and leads the entire NBA in averaging that much also. It might be early, but not only is he leading the league in point per game but he is also shooting the ball not quite as well as he has shot in past years. His field goal percentage is very low but since the year is early and were talking Kobe here, than that number will be likely to go up. Not only that, but Kobe also is pursuing Michael Jordan’s all-time scoring record of 32,292 points as he only trails by just over 200 points. Likely to break the record before Christmas, Kobe would move to 3rd all-time scoring list.
The Lakers not only have a different team this year, but also a new coach. Byron Scott who played for the Lakers in the 80’s teamed up with Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and James Worthy to win multiple championships in that decade. He is now coaching one of the most historical teams in NBA history and has started off with the worst record in 60 years going 1-9 in the first 10 games. In those games though point guard Nick Young did not play, and first round draft pick Julies Randle only played the first game in the teams loss to the Rockets after breaking his leg in the 3rd quarter and will miss the rest of the season.
So how will the Laker’s make out this season with a fully healthy Kobe assuming he plays the entire season with no major injuries? Could they possibly make another run at an NBA championship as they acquired a team with fairly talented players over the summer? It is tough to say this early in the season but with Kobe Bryant as the team’s leader.
