Top Ten Christmas Movies

The Herald’s Hanna Smith counts down her personal favorite top ten Christmas movies.

10. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This movie is a Christmas classic. The film employs Jim Carrey as the Grinch, the green hairy humanoid main character with a hate for Christmas that wants nothing but to ruin it for everyone else in Whoville. The movie travels into the Grinch’s childhood and where his lack of Christmas spirit took root through to his adulthood where his most evil plot is going to be carried out. Ruin Christmas. But a little citizen of Whoville, named Sindey Lou Who, along with the citizens of Whoville gathering together in selebration of Christmas makes the Grinch have a change of heart. Because after all the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that day. This movie shows that Christmas isn’t all about presents and decorations, but rather all about the spirit of generosity and being kind to each other.

9. Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and the Island of the Misfit ToysRudolph

Rudolf was one of my personal favorites as a child. This movie hosts Rudolf as the protagonist, a looked-down-upon young reindeer with a glowing red nose. All he wants is to be accepted and wanted but because of his nose others can’t see that as happening. With the help of an out casted elf the two embark on a journey around the North Pole. And his nose, which he had once been shunned for, turns out to be his greatest ally and Santa ends up using him as his head reindeer so that he may see through the fog to deliver his gifts. This movie possesses a different characteristic from other holiday movies, perseverance. And represents how hard work and compassion can bring you great things.

 8. Miracle on 34th Street

This movie helps inspire people to believe in the Christmas spirit by giving a young girl with some doubt of Santa reassurance to keep on believing. A child’s imagination is an amazing thing, and Santa gives them a great role model to believe in. He emphasizes goodwill and generosity, two things that the world would be better off if we shared with each other a little more, rather than a little less. Since the young girl got confirmation that Santa Claus is real, it helps keep the Christmas Spirit alive and well. If it’s one thing that this movie gets across it’s that everyone deserves kindness and generosity.

 7. Frosty’s Winter Wonderland

This movie brings the Christmas magic to Frosty a happy go lucky snowman who wants nothing but to make kids happy. It’s mostly a generic winter movie until the end, when Santa Claus comes to take Frosty away so he won’t melt. This shows that it’s important to being genuinely kind to people because you don’t know what the happiness can do for them. It may brighten their day or it may brighten their year. It’s important to spread holiday cheer to all. The message is greatly received by little kids, which the animation is directed at. The movie shows them that the little things matter and can make a big difference.

6.  Charlie’s Brown’s Christmas

This movie brings to light the commercialization of Christmas and how the characters are toying with the idea of what Christmas really is. Throughout the movie they are trying to figure this point out, is it all about presents or something more? The further into the movie we get we discover that Christmas is about kindness, generosity and goodwill. This is defiantly a good movie to watch this holiday season to bring everything into perspective about how the holiday isn’t all about the presents.

 5. Home AlonePolarExpress

A Holiday classic, which features a young boy named Kevin from a big family that is going to go on a vacation for Christmas instead of doing all of the presents. But that plan all changes when Kevin is accidentally left home alone while his family embarks on the vacation. An overall good movie, that shows the importance of family when his mother does everything possible to get home to him, the Spirit of Christmas by giving off the glow of good will and kindness when he discovers that his neighbor isn’t so bad after all, and adds a little humor when Kevin tortures the criminals that are trying to break into his home.

4. Disney’s A Christmas Carol

This movie helps to inspire people to be a better person. And shows that to be wealthy is not all about money but instead is about how good of a person you are and how everyone is doing is your business. Charity is your business, kindness too. This movie’s graphics are good for being from 2009 and add to the picture quality greatly. This movie emphasizes that even the most cold-hearted people can have their heart thawed by Christmas, and that goodwill and kindness can come through even the darkest of personalities to give a person a whole new outlook on life. Wealth isn’t about having a lot of money, it’s about being kind and spreading goodwill and happiness to all.

3. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This movie is all around great not to mention it is a movie that almost everyone can relate to. Going all out for Christmas is the main character Clark’s, goal he decorates his home to epic proportions, and he enjoys some “nice” family time in the downtime with his interesting brother and his family all of a sudden crashing their Christmas. Not to mention his boss doesn’t give the year’s annual bonus and it is basically the definition of a Christmas gone wrong. Until when his brother helps Clark to convince his boss that he had done him and the other employees of the company wrong by not giving out the Christmas bonuses without telling them. This convinces the scrooge, I mean Clark’s boss to change his mind and bring some kindness and goodwill back into the train-wreck of a Christmas celebration.

 2. ElfElf

This movie is a classical among my family. Its humor accompanied with a Christmas twist. Will Ferrell plays Buddy the Elf, who is actually not an elf. He just thinks that he is. He was raised in the North Pole by Papa Elf, until he finds out that he is in fact not an elf but rather a human. He then embarks on a journey to find his father Walter, who resides in New York City with his wife and son Michael. He ends up being mistaken for working in a department store’s Santa work Shop, and ends up falling in love with one of the employees. After finding his father Buddy joins the family, and causes some up rest, which causes him to run away. But in a happy turn of events, Buddy helps save Christmas by restoring Christmas spirit.

 1. The Polar Express

This movie hit theaters in November of 2004 and was directed at a younger audience. I believe that this movie encompasses what it really is like for a child that believes in Santa Claus and what they experience except with a twist that happens to be a train that brings children on a journey to the North Pole. It truly brings holiday spirit to the table by showing the main character being helpful and kind. This movie also reinforces the reality of Santa Claus, but showing that he is a man of pure heart and goodwill, and presents a role model for us to follow at this time of year.
