The unpredictability of hurricanes continue to impress science. They have also raised questions about how even to this day, neither science, technology, nor governments have established methods to prevent the amount of damage that they cause. Even to this day, our governments have not been able to prevent loss, life, nor minimize the damages that citizens have to live with after each phenomenon. This year is no exception. Florida residents have become victims of a category 4 hurricane that was near 2mph shy from being a category 5.

Hurricane Ian first hit Florida on September 28, 2022 and made its landfall on the West coast. Ian was going 150 mph and featured damaging winds when it hit Florida. According to an article entitled “Hurricane Ian’s Path of Destruction,The monster storm made its first U.S. landfall on Wednesday on Florida’s west coast as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, shredding homes with ferocious winds topping 150 mph.”

Hurricane Ian formed into a storm on September 26. Then, on September 27, Ian headed towards Florida’s western coast. The hurricane then headed toward Florida’s western coast, where residents of coastal communities were ordered to evacuate. Afterall, Hurricane Ian pummeled Florida for twelve hours before continuing its trajectory up the East coast.

As it continued moving east its trajectory did not go unseen. The amount of damage Florida residents are now suffering goes beyond what experts predicted. One of the saddest facts about Hurricane is that in the city of Lee alone, 45 lives were lost. So far, Florida suffered from 85 confirmed lives taken by this hurricane, making Hurricane Ian one of the deadliest hurricanes in Florida since 1935.

Hurricane Ian’s damage to Florida was immense and included flooding, the destruction of homes and businesses and the loss of power.

The government is trying to send support to the people in Florida for help. Recently, the Biden Administration approved a request for an emergency declaration from Governor Ron DeSantis. This declaration will ultimately help allocate more funding to keep displaced residents safe during these uncertain times.

Hurricane Ian is just one of many natural weather disasters that have occurred in the territorial US over the past month. In September, Hurricane Fiona caused widespread destruction in Puerto Rico and left many families without a home. We will keep you updated on the latest natural disasters.
