The Patriots Parade Hits Boston
The Herald’s reporters Ashley Morsen and Brian Swiezrewski were on hand as Boston and The New England Patriots celebrated their Super Bowl victory as only they can!
Tens of thousands of dedicated New England Patriots fans braved the bitter cold weather to show their appreciation for their awesome team and scream out a roaring congratulations to their favorite players after their recent win at the Super Bowl XLIX championship.
Fans woke up at the break of dawn, traveling from all over into the heart of Massachusetts to be a part of the festivities. Waking up early was no match for fans though, that had coffees in hand, fueling up on Boston’s very own, Dunkin.
The massive amounts of people bordered the gates that lined Boylston Street in hopes to get the best views possible. As time ticked on and the clocks grew closer to the highly anticipated eleven o’clock in the morning, fans blew on their hands and bobbed up and down to warm up a bit as temperatures surely became hard to ignore.
Decked out in Pats gear, pom-pom Patriot’s winter hats were popular for bundled up fans. To pass time before the duck boats set sail down the route, fans sought entertainment by passing a small blue bouncy ball from one side of the street to the other. Set outside Marshalls, the crowd laughed and cheered with every catch, and when somebody threw an unfortunate throw leaving the ball in the center of the road, people encouraged the Boston police to roll it back to them. Being a tease, they pretended to get the ball, but instead walked right past it. Everyone turned their heads to the right at the first glimpse of activity heading their way, and Musket Men fired their guns off with a worthy boom and a cloud of smoke, initiating the coming of the boats. Red, white and blue confetti exploded in the air and blew steadily in the direction of the path from the slight gusts of wind. Boston was ready to rumble!
Arriving in the third boat, smiling Bill Belichick waved the Lombardi trophy that was well earned in the recent 28-24 victory Seattle on Sunday. Also in the beginning of the parade, fans saw the beaming smile of Tom Brady, also showcasing a trophy, accompanied by his young son who came along for the ride. It was easy to see how much he was enjoying the moment while still taking in the excitement of this unbelievable time. Crowds chanted a “Brady! Brady! Brady” as his boat rolled by with fist pumps and gratuity towards New England’s beloved quarterback.
With every boat that came to sight, eyes were peeled to see what Patriots superstar was aboard. Huge amps sounded loud hip-hop music and the atmosphere of the whole thing was incredible. Hard to be unnoticed, Julian Edelman danced his way through the parade. Wearing shades, wide receiver Edelman who scored the game-winning touchdown, jumped onto the top of his duck boat various times and spread his arms taking in all the happiness the crowd had to offer. He held up a sign with a popular internet meme that’s been making its way across social media these past few days Pats beat the Hawks 28-24. The sign mocked Richard Sherman who held up four fingers which were debated to either bring attention to the score at the time where the Seattle Seahawks led in the third quarter with 24 points, or to make fun of Patriot’s Darrelle Revis, number 24 who attempted to stop the play. Whatever the reason of Sherman signing the numbers 2 and 4 with his fingers, Boston fans had fun remixing the photo with funny arrangements like “How many points did Seattle lose by?” “How many points did the Patriots win by?” and clearly Edelman’s favorite, “How many rings does Brady have?”
As if Edelman’s jokes weren’t enough, another player put on a show for fans. The known to be partier tight end for the Patriots surely lived up to the expected. Wearing a minion hat, Rob Gronkowski took full advantage of celebrating his team’s win. Continuously receiving handouts from the fans, he chugged everything from multiple beers to a nip of Fireball and even popped a bottle of champagne, showering it over himself and those around him. He shook his booty and danced like nobody was watching but became a news sensation as photos of him and videos of his moves hit the internet. Many people commented on his celebration as “legendary,” and that it definitely was.
Despite local radio station criticism early Wednesday morning that doubted Boston’s ability to efficiently host such a massive event directly after two consecutive big snowstorms, the city pulled through and ended up holding yet another epic event, an addition to the wonderful tradition.
The parade routed about a mile and a half long that kicked off from the Prudential Tower, and ended at the City Hall Plaza had originally been scheduled for Tuesday, February 3rd, but a snowstorm Monday forced Mayor Walsh to postpone. In spite of date changes, towering snow banks and the finger-numbing cold, the turnout made by New England fans was everything expected and some. People held up signs encouraging, “You should’ve been here!” because anyone who attended could explain to you how much of a community everyone at the parade shared on Wednesday, and proved why New England fans are truly the best. The Patriots winning their forth Super Bowl title has kicked off 2015 in the best way possible, here’s to many more in the future Pats!
