The Purple Knights of Holyoke High School are midway through their 2025 girls varsity volleyball campaign, and while the results so far reflect a rebuilding year, there are signs of heart, promise, and growth. Their recent record shows an overall 6-10 as of the latest update. The team plays in the Western Massachusetts region and faces tough competition in league and non‐league play. They’ve racked up some key wins, including a 3-1 victory over Belchertown High School on October 2.
The roster includes a mix of seniors who bring experience and underclassmen working to step up. Some highlighted players. Ashantylis Calderon – Senior, Outside Hitter (OH), Melliani Santana Rodriguez – Senior and Kierstin St. Lawrence – Senior.
These seniors provide leadership in the locker room and on the court. The rest of the roster is comprised of talented young athletes eager to improve and contribute. The team opened the season with a win over Commerce High School, taking the match 3-1 on September 22. They also picked up their win over Belchertown on October 2 Several matches have been tough, including losses such as a 0-3 defeat to Franklin County Technical School on October 14 and 1-3 to South Hadley High School on October 7. Consistency has been a major hurdle — stringing together wins has proven difficult, especially on the road. Workplace fundamentals (serving, passing, offensive efficiency) are areas where improvement will make a real difference as the season continues.
Despite the hurdles, there’s cause for optimism. With the senior leadership in place and younger athletes gaining valuable experience, the program hopes to build toward stronger league play and postseason positioning. The motto for the remainder of the season might be: “Progress over perfection.”
For the Holyoke community, the Purple Knights’ volleyball season is more than just wins and losses. It represents opportunity, growth, team spirit and local pride. The team gives student-athletes a chance to learn perseverance, collaboration, and leadership — traits that carry well beyond the court.
