Holyoke High Shows its “Green Thumb” with Creation of Garden Club

Holyoke High offers its students yet another opportunity to get involved within their school and community with the emergence of the newfound Garden Club.

“The Garden Project” is the formation of a new club at Holyoke High. It is a collaboration project with the local garden organization Nuestras Raices, who owns twelve gardens and a farm in Holyoke. Second year science teacher at Holyoke High, Hannah Kincaid, reached out to the group for assistance in creating the club and bringing a garden to Holyoke High School.

During the summer two members, Nathan Colon ’17 and Michael Varley ’17, accompanied by Holyoke High teachers and a representative of Nuestras Raices, attended a conference in Vermont to better understand how school gardens work.

Colon commented, “The garden club is a great way for students to spend their time in a productive way.”

Adviser Kincaid hopes to have four raised beds in the school courtyard in construction by October and begin growing squash this fall. She also hopes to create more garden space around the school and have a small herb garden for use in the school cafeteria.

“I hope students think about where their food comes from,” Kincaid told The Herald.
