Winter sports went very well this year, especially for the boys and girls basketball teams. The boys’ basketball team was ranked 4th going into the playoffs with a 14-6 record. Holyoke played the number one seed Putnam closer than any other team this season. Holyoke played Leominster in the quarterfinals on Friday February 28 and fought hard but came up short in the end.

The girls’ basketball was ranked 3rd with a 13-7 record heading into the playoffs and defeated Westfield 46 to 40 in the first round. Although they weren’t able to overcome Northampton, they still had a great season. When team member Kelly Reardon was asked about this season she said, “This season has been great.”

The hockey team was ranked 4th with a 6-10-4 record heading into the playoffs. They were defeated by Chicopee High in the first round in double overtime.

The girls track team finished the season 1-9, but had 4 Western Mass qualifiers. Those included junior Grace Hamel in the 600 meter event, juniors Ashley Morsen and Lara McGeer in shot put, and senior Maddy Carroll in the 1000 meter where she set a school record with a time of 3:17.27. Maddy Carroll and Grace Hamel also competed in the 4 x 800 meter relay along with junior Nora Taupier and senior Grace Lavelle.

The boys track team went 3-7, and had 11 Western Mass qualifiers. Those qualifiers included senior Ryan Kirton and junior Carter Theriault in 55 meter hurdles, junior Vincent Sabater in the 55 meter, juniors Gabriel Rodriguez and Justin Evans in the 55 meter dash, junior Matt McAndrew in the mile, junior Michael Cabral in the 600 meter, junior Tyler Tardy in the 1000 meter, junior Frankie Hoey in the 300 meter.
