Squirrels Imprisoned in School Courtyard Due to Lack of Trees

Staff Reporter Maggie McAndrew writes a hard-hitting exposé commenting on the lack of trees in the Holyoke High courtyard and the hardships it places on the surrounding squirrel population.

Squirrels Imprisoned in School Courtyard Due to Lack of Trees

Sometime ago there used to be trees growing in Holyoke High Schools courtyard, but for seemingly unknown reasons they were cut down and there are no longer trees growing.

Due to this, squirrels are getting into the courtyard, but have no way of getting back out. This can cause the squirrels to starve and they won’t be able to live their lives to the fullest.

Many students observe these squirrels and try to feed them.

“Parks and Rec should consider planting trees to save these squirrels,” said Kassidy Lawrence ’18.

Students also believe we could fundraise in order to have money to plant trees.

“We could raise money and get a group of students who would be willing to plant these trees,” commented Katie Keane ’18.

I also talked to English teacher Mr. Courchesne, who actually remembers trees in the courtyard.

“They were very nice,” Mr. Courchesne told The Herald. “I don’t know why they would cut them down.”

Although these are just squirrels they do not deserve to be stuck in a high school courtyard. Holyoke High School students and community members could come together to get the squirrels their rightly deserved homes.
