Freshman Academy Election Project

Members of the freshman academy engaged inter-disciplinary project around the 2016 election.

A little less than a week before the 2016 Presidential Election, on Friday November 4th, Holyoke High’s freshman academy met in the cafeteria to hold an election of their own.

Students from History, English, and Science classes were asked to make posters, endorsements, or video presentations on why they were choosing to vote for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

Students Jordan Sudas, Adam Santos, Henry Ramos, Shivani Ramraykha, Brendan Meyer, Jacob Swinehart, Isiah Colon, and Micheal Lukasiewicz chose to present posters, show videos, and inform fellow students on why to vote for their choice candidate.

The idea behind the assembly was to get students involved in politics and to stress the importance of this year’s election. Towards the end of the assembly a question was posed to the students – “Even though you guys are too young to vote, what can you do to inform others about the importance of voting?”

Involved students were offered extra credit points for participating and the assembly ended with a vote in which Hillary Clinton came out on top.
