Even though the school year has just begun, for us seniors Pep Rally, Prom, Senior Night and even graduation are already on our minds. But before all this senior fun we have one last challenge: applying to college. It’s stressful and nerve-wracking but with a few key tips it won’t be all that scary.

The first step is to find several schools that offer the majors sports and other activities that interest you. Mrs. Nadeau of the guidance department stresses that as a prospective college student you should, “visit schools, attend open houses, and don’t go to a school you haven’t visited.” So before you hit send on the common application take the time to visit colleges or you’ll regret your decision later.

With deadlines fast approaching, many seniors are feeling overwhelmed. The question stumping many seniors is when to apply. There are three deadlines that applicants should be aware of. The first is called Early Action and it is a non-binding option with a deadline in late October to mid-November. This allows seniors to know if they’ve been accepted to their top choices before Christmas break. The second option is Regular Decision which has a deadline of February first for most colleges. The last is Early Decision which is a binding admittance, this means that if you are accepted you are required to attend this college or university. Many counselors are weary of this process because once students are admitted they are not given the opportunity to explore other options. Choose whichever option is right for you. Just do not rush. Guidance counselor Mrs. Horton warns, “Early deadlines are only a good option if you are prepared.”

Another very important step is filling out financial aid forms, or FASFA. These forms are online and need to be completed every year that you want or need financial help in college. It is necessary for your parents to get their tax returns done before applying for this financial aid, and the deadline is usually March 1st. In addition to financial aid, scholarships are a great way to get help with college finances because they give financial aid that you will not need to pay back. Now is the time to start looking for scholarships; you can stop by the guidance department to find out more information.

It’s important not to stress out about all of the paperwork and deadlines and to have fun your senior year. It’s the last year of high school and a very big stepping stone in your life. Choosing the right college or university for you can mean a bright and successful future. So as long as you stay on top of things in this college application process you’ll be receiving acceptance letters before you know it.
