Girls Soccer Week 1 Recap
The HHS Girl’s Soccer Team capped off an impressive week with a victory over Central.
Holyoke High’s girls’ soccer team started their year on the right foot. With a strong showing at their first game against Holyoke Catholic, Holyoke High proved they are determined to have a good season.
Marykate Albert ’18, Holyoke’s sophomore sweeper, placed her corner kick to the back of the goal and Amber Lempke ’17, Holyoke High’s junior captain and forward, chested the ball into the goal to give Holyoke High the early lead. Holyoke held possession most of the game, and shortly after sophomore midfielder Katie Sabourin ’18 netted another goal for Holyoke.
Freshmen Lauren Ryan ’19 scored Holyoke’s final goal as she followed Lempke’s shot into the box and finished. Holyoke Catholic’s only goal came from a penalty kick late in the game.
FINAL SCORE: Holyoke 3, Catholic 1
In their next matchup against Division 1 Longmeadow, Holyoke was put to the test.
Katie Sabourin’s early goal gave Holyoke the quick lead but with many scoring opportunities and holding possession most of the game Holyoke was unable to put another away.
With a strong defensive showing and junior Callie Cavanaugh ’17 in goal, Longmeadow was unable to finish, giving the Knights their second win.
FINAL SCORE: Holyoke 1, Longmeadow 0
In their last game of the week against Central, Holyoke had a rough start.
Unable to score and worn down from their games earlier in the week, the game was 0-0 at halftime. The Knights knew they had to step it up. Coming out tough in the second half, Holyoke did what they know and captains Jamie Robert ’17 and Amber Lempke put together a goal scoring run that kept Holyoke’s winning streak going.
FINAL SCORE: Holyoke 1, Central 0
The Lady Knights hope to keep up their intensity and keep their streak alive.
