Holyoke High Faculty Takes an A+ Win Against Seniors
Sara Morin highlights how Holyoke High faculty and seniors battled it out on the basketball court.
When you think of a “Faculty vs. Seniors Basketball Game,” what comes to mind? Do you think of the student athletes coming out victorious by a long shot? Well, on March 5th, Holyoke High hosted their annual basketball game where the staff and students had a chance to face off in the large gym. Both teams suited up and came prepared and ready to put up a fight.
Familiar faces, such as Mr. Taupier (Business Department), Mr. Reagan (Math Department), Ms. Andrews (Science Department), and several other HHS staff members flooded the staff bench. On the other side of the score table, seniors such as Dan “Dirty Dan” Morrison, Aaron “Big U” Reed, Seth Sypniak, Carter Theriault, Dan “Corn” Whelihan, Morgan Lempke, and the Herald’s own Aiden Moriarty and Chris Perez came into the gym determined to win.
The teachers took the tip-off and quickly set the pace of the game, with Holyoke High alumnus, teacher, and member of the 1,000 Point club Tim Dunn leading the educators on the scoreboard. By the end of the first quarter, it was still anyone’s game. The not-so-exciting second quarter ended with a score of 29-23, seniors. But the teachers took charge in the third quarter, closing with a three pointer (and one) by freshman basketball coach, Rashad “Hershey” Milledge, making the score 49-36 as the seniors desperately tried to hold them down. With 27.5 seconds left in the 4th quarter, it was a toss-up game with the teachers leading 62-56. The students scored another basket to make the final score 58-62, but they put up a good fight.
One of the refs (along with seniors James Kennedy and Mike Cabral), Mr. McAndrew, from the History Department said, “It was a very competitive game, and both teams exhibited good sportsmanship.” Both teams had a blast and showed their great skills, but in the end the teachers definitely “schooled” the seniors on the court.
