As we move into the holiday season, many local retail stores will be looking for extra help.

The Holyoke Mall at Ingleside – a great place to look for a seasonal job!

When the holidays roll around, retailers are always looking for extra help. Taking up a job during the holiday season and doing well could land you a part-time job without having to jump through hoops. Most retailers are only looking for help during this hectic time of year, but if you do a good enough job, they might decide to keep you and you would have a part-time job even after the season ends. Taking up a job during this time of year can be good to earn a little extra money for yourself to either get yourself something nice or buy friends and/or family gifts. Retailers like Best Buy and Gap are hiring, and a little more than half of retailers are offering to pay more than ten dollars an hour.

With the new deal that happened on November 19 2013, it was voted that minimum wage will be increasing one dollar per year for the next three years. This will make the seasonal jobs more profitable and appealing as the years go on.

When going for a job, seasonal or not, it’s always nice to have a nice looking résumé. A résumé is a background summary of what you have done in the past. These things range from school sports to afterschool activities or volunteer work. Mr. Fienberg’s financial literacy class can help you prepare you for typing up a résumé. The best way to make your résumé look nice and noticeable is to print it on the brightest paper you can find. When you are typing a résumé, make sure to keep it on one side of one page. Mr. Fienberg always says “It’s always nice to write a thank you note after the interview.” When you send in the thank you note, make sure to write down your number again.

Mr. Courchesne’s Writing for the Next Level class is another class that teaches step by step how to write a résumé as well as other important aspects of job writing. “We do a lot of work on how to construct a résumé,” Mr. Courchesne said. “We also tackle filling out applications, cover letters, and we hold mock job interviews.”

If you are an upperclassmen interested in learning more about this important process, sign up for Mr. Fienberg’s Financial Literacy class (available only to seniors) or Mr. Courchesne’s Writing for the Next Level (available to juniors and seniors). Good luck with the job hunting!
