HHS Learns the Five D’s of Dodgeball

On Sunday, May 3, Holyoke High students, faculty, and staff “dodged for the cause” in a rousing game of dodge ball to raise autism awareness.

“If you’re going to become true dodgeballers, then you’ve got to learn the five D’s of Dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge,” goes Coach Patches O’Houlihan in the classic film Dodgeball: An Underdog Story.

Holyoke student proved that they learned their five D’s this past Sunday. Holyoke High students and faculty members had the opportunity of participating in a Business Club sponsored dodgeball tournament.

The tournament, “Dodge for a Cause,” raised money and spread awareness for those battling autism. Participators woke up bright and early and got together in the big gym at 9:00 A.M.

As they strategized with their teammates, the first match began- Snoop Doggy Dodge vs. the Black Knights (featuring Holyoke High’s own principal, Mr. Sullivan!). The matches were best out of five rounds, each round five minutes long. As the second round was won, Snoop Doggy Dodge was sure to have clenched a spot in the next slot on the bracket. As confidence rose, their performance during the last rounds simply weren’t enough to defeat the Black Knights.

The games continued in the big gym while the loser’s bracket took possession of the small gym. The Strikers went undefeated and advanced to the championship where they met the Irish Rovers.

The Irish Rovers lost their second game, but dominated the small gym and earned another opportunity to return to the big gym for a shot at the finals. The Strikers went head to head with the Irish Rovers and the two battled it out until the Strikers finally left the Irish Rovers with no one left on the court.

The Strikers claimed the big win of the morning and took home the trophy.
